Review: The Best and Worst Parts of DraftKings
I've used DraftKings Sportsbook for eight months now. I live in New Jersey where sports betting is legal. During these eight months, I placed over 200 bets. Some won, most lost. That's betting.
DraftKings does some things brilliantly. They also mess up other things badly. This review covers both sides honestly. No sugarcoating the problems. No ignoring the good parts either.
The Best Parts: What DraftKings Does Right
The App Actually Works Great
The DraftKings mobile app is fast and simple. I use an iPhone 14. The app opens in under two seconds. Finding tonight's NBA games takes three taps. Placing a bet takes maybe 10 seconds total.
I compared this to FanDuel and BetMGM. DraftKings loads faster than BetMGM. About the same speed as FanDuel. According to App Annie, DraftKings is the #1 downloaded sports betting app in the US. I understand why.
The bet slip (where your bets appear) is clear. Shows your stake, potential payout, and odds. No confusion. The old Caesars Sportsbook app used to hide information. DraftKings shows everything upfront.
Desktop website works fine too. Clean design. Not as many annoying pop-ups as some competitors.
Markets and Odds Are Competitive
DraftKings offers bets on everything. NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer, tennis, UFC, even darts. I once bet on Australian rugby at 3 AM because I couldn't sleep. They had odds for it.
For my sports betting overview, I track odds across five major sportsbooks daily. DraftKings usually has the best or second-best odds for NFL spreads. Here's a real example from October 15th:
Chiefs -7 vs Broncos:
DraftKings: -110
FanDuel: -112
BetMGM: -115
DraftKings had the best odds. Better odds mean more money if you win. Over 100 bets, this adds up.
However, their soccer odds are average. FanDuel often beats them on Premier League matches. Nobody is best at everything.
Same Game Parlays Are Actually Fun
DraftKings invented Same Game Parlays (SGP). This lets you combine multiple bets from one game. Example: I bet on Lakers to win + LeBron to score 25+ points + game total under 220 points. All in one bet.
I made an SGP on October 18th. Warriors vs Lakers. My picks:
- Warriors to win (+120)
- Steph Curry over 27.5 points
- Game total under 225 points
$20 bet would pay $180 if it won. Warriors won. Curry scored 32. Total was 218. I won $180. This feature is addictive in a good way.
FanDuel copied this feature. But DraftKings still has more SGP options for most sports.
Deposits Happen Instantly
I deposited money eight times during testing. Methods I used: debit card, PayPal, online banking. Every single time, money appeared in under 30 seconds.
No fees on deposits. Ever. Some offshore sportsbooks charge 5% for card deposits. DraftKings charges zero.
Minimum deposit is $5. Good for casual bettors who don't want to risk much.
Live Betting Interface Is Clean
Live betting means betting while the game is happening. DraftKings shows live scores clearly. Odds update every few seconds. I can see score, time remaining, and current odds all on one screen.
I tested live betting during a Celtics game on October 10th. Celtics were down 8 at halftime. DraftKings offered +180 for Celtics to win. I bet $25. Celtics came back and won. I made $45 profit.
The live betting section never crashed on me. It did freeze once for 10 seconds during a big NFL Sunday. But only once in eight months.
The Worst Parts: Where DraftKings Fails
Withdrawals Take Forever
This is my biggest complaint. Getting your money out is slow and annoying.
I requested my first withdrawal on September 8th. Amount: $250 to my debit card. Here's the timeline:
Monday 2:00 PM: Requested withdrawal
Monday 6:00 PM: Email saying "withdrawal is being reviewed"
Tuesday 10:00 AM: Email saying "withdrawal approved"
Friday 3:00 PM: Money finally arrived in my bank
Four days total. Meanwhile, FanDuel paid me in 24 hours. Bet365 took 48 hours. DraftKings is the slowest of the major books I've tested.
According to Legal Sports Report, slow withdrawals are the #1 complaint about DraftKings on review sites. I now understand why.
PayPal withdrawals are faster. Two days usually. But not everyone has PayPal.
Bonus Terms Are Designed to Confuse
DraftKings advertises big bonuses everywhere. "Bet $5, Get $200 in Bonus Bets!" Sounds amazing. The reality is complicated.
I claimed a "Bet $50, Get $50 Bonus" promotion in September. The fine print said:
- Bonus comes as five separate $10 bets, not one $50 bet
- Each $10 bet expires in 7 days
- You can't combine bonus bets
- If you win, you get the profit but not the stake back
Example: I used a $10 bonus bet on +150 odds. I won. DraftKings paid me $15 (the profit) but kept the $10 stake. So my $10 bonus bet only won me $15 instead of $25 like a real $10 bet would.
This is industry standard according to BettingUSA, but it feels sneaky. The ads don't explain this clearly.
Customer Service Is Hit or Miss
I contacted DraftKings support four times:
Time 1 (September 12th): Asked about a bet settlement via chat. Waited 8 minutes for response. Agent was helpful. Problem solved in 15 minutes. Good experience.
Time 2 (September 28th): Asked why my withdrawal was taking so long. Waited 22 minutes for chat response. Agent just copy-pasted the same "1-5 business days" answer three times. Not helpful.
Time 3 (October 5th): Reported a technical bug. Sent email. Got response 36 hours later. They fixed the bug though. Okay experience.
Time 4 (October 19th): Questioned a declined bonus bet. Waited 31 minutes in chat. Agent couldn't explain why. Transferred me to another agent. Total time: 50 minutes. Frustrating experience.
The quality depends on which agent you get. Some are great. Some are useless. Trustpilot reviews show the same pattern. Customer service is inconsistent.
They Limit Winners Quickly
My friend James is a sharp bettor. He won $3,000 in two months on DraftKings. Then DraftKings limited his account. Now he can only bet maximum $50 per game. He used to bet $500.
I haven't been limited yet because I lose more than I win (like most bettors). But according to Sports Handle, DraftKings is known for quickly limiting successful bettors.
This is legal but frustrating. If you're good at betting and win consistently, DraftKings will eventually restrict you. FanDuel and BetMGM do this too, but apparently slower.
Promos Are Everywhere and Annoying
DraftKings sends me 3-5 emails per day. Push notifications every few hours. Pop-ups when I open the app. All promoting new bonuses or boosts.
I get it. They want me to bet more. But it's too much. I turned off notifications after two weeks. My email inbox still gets spammed daily. There's an unsubscribe option but it doesn't stop everything.
The Middle Ground: What's Just Average
Some aspects of DraftKings are neither great nor terrible. Just normal.
Betting limits are standard. $0.50 minimum on most bets. Maximum varies by sport and market. I've never hit a maximum on regular bets.
The rewards program exists but is nothing special. You earn "crowns" for betting. Trade crowns for bonus bets or merchandise. I've earned 5,000 crowns in eight months. That's worth about $25 in bonuses. Better than nothing but not exciting.
Cash-out feature works fine. Let's you settle bets early before the game ends. Standard feature that everyone has now.
Who Should Use DraftKings (and Who Shouldn't)
DraftKings is great for casual bettors who want a reliable app and good odds. If you bet $10-$100 per week and just want to make sports more exciting, DraftKings works well.
It's also good for parlay bettors. The Same Game Parlay options are the best in the industry.
Mobile-first users will like it. The app is genuinely better than most competitors.
However, DraftKings is NOT good for serious bettors who win consistently. You'll get limited quickly. If you're a sharp bettor, try Pinnacle or Circa Sports instead. They don't limit winners as aggressively.
Not good if you need fast withdrawals. The 3-5 day wait is too long for some people. FanDuel is faster.
Not good if you hate marketing emails. You'll get bombarded daily.
Final Verdict: Is DraftKings Worth It?
After eight months and 200+ bets, my honest opinion: DraftKings is a solid choice but not perfect.
The app is excellent. The odds are competitive. Same Game Parlays are fun. Deposits are instant. These are real advantages.
But the slow withdrawals frustrate me. The bonus terms feel misleading. Customer service is unpredictable. These are real problems.
Will I keep using DraftKings? Yes, but not exclusively. I also use FanDuel for faster withdrawals and BetRivers for certain promotions. According to American Gaming Association research, 67% of sports bettors use multiple sportsbooks. I'm one of them.
For new bettors, DraftKings is a fine starting point. Just understand the withdrawal times and read bonus terms carefully. Don't expect to get rich. Most people lose money on sports betting. I'm down about $300 after eight months. That's entertainment cost for me.
DraftKings is the biggest sportsbook in America for a reason. They do enough things right. But they're not flawless. No sportsbook is.
